About the area

Facilities

The shul is ideally located near the many kosher shops, cafes and restaurants. The centre of town includes a large modern leisure centre, library, cinema and superstores (24h Tesco, Morrisons, Lidl and Aldi,). The town is also well-known throughout the UK and beyond as the home of the Elstree studios, producing film and TV contents and occupying a large area in the north of town.

Transport

Borehamwood is a busy and vibrant town with excellent public amenities.: The Thameslink Elstree-Borehamwood station gives access to central London in less than 25 minutes and is also direct to Luton airport. The M1 and A1 pass just outside the town (and the M25 is nearby), and buses lines connect to Edgware and beyond.

Health

Several hospitals are easily accessible by car, train or bus, including Barnet Hospital and Watford General Hospital. To complement NHS services, Hatzola Herts is currently being set-up in Hertfordshire and will provide a first-aid support to all residents of Elstree and Borehamwood. For more information, see www.hatzolaherts.org.uk

Nature

The area is part of the green belt, with access to many footpaths around the town which also connect to nearby villages, making it a welcoming place for walkers, cyclists and all nature lovers. As well as Aldenham country park in Elstree, the town is home to several local parks with large play areas for younger and older children.

Young families

Borehamwood is seen as more affordable to young couples than Golders Green, Hendon and Edgware, and many families are moving in, creating a welcoming atmosphere. To help the growing number of children and young families, two outstanding Jewish nurseries along with many other registered childminder groups cater for the community and beyond. The town is also well served by Yavneh Primary school and College, is close to Hertsmere Jewish Primary, and is also at a reasonable distance to schools in Edgware.

Eruv

The Eruv is supervised by the Ebor Eruv Charitable Trust, a cross-community organisation set-up to operate the Eruv in Elstree and Borehamwood and it is supervised by the London Beth Din. The boundaries of the Eruv, and other information are available at www.eboreruv.org

Jewish community

In addition to Ohr Yisrael, the town is home to several Jewish communities, including the Borehamwood and Elstree United synagogue, the Shtiebl in Elstree, the Jewish Life Centre, and the Borehamwood Kollel. There is a mikveh in the area. Several events are organised cross-communally every year and are a chance for the wider community to get together.
